Oceans are supercharging hurricanes past Category 5

Warming oceans are fueling a surge of extreme, off-the-charts storms—so powerful that scientists say it’s time to invent a whole new hurricane category.

Deep ocean hot spots packed with heat are making the strongest hurricanes and typhoons more likely—and more dangerous. These regions, especially near the Philippines and the Caribbean, are expanding as climate change warms ocean waters far below the surface. As a result, storms powerful enough to exceed Category 5 are appearing more often, with over half occurring in just the past decade. Researchers say recognizing a new “Category 6” could improve public awareness and disaster planning

Birdfeeding

Today is cloudy, cool, foggy, and wet.  It rained last night and water is still dripping from the trees today.  Also the thermometer-hygrometer peripheral for our home weather station has died, so we need to see if that's available as a replacement part.  :/

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 12/25/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 12/25/25 -- I hauled the last large branches to the ritual meadow.  Then I started the long process of raking the parking lot.

EDIT 12/25/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 12/25/25 -- I did more raking in the parking lot.

I've seen two squirrels in the trees.  I've seen several cardinals flying around.

EDIT 12/25/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

It's drizzling again.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

Christmas Lockbox

If there is anything you need to get off your chest, to let go so that you can get on, you can safely do it here. This post will be open for anyone, all day--but then tomorrow, it goes away. No judgement, no recrimination. Just a free space for anyone who needs to vent. And if no one does, nothing is lost!

Basically, this is someone's "Hard Things" post for holiday stress. Brilliant.

This Conversation...

Bokeh is that creamy blur of color and light at the forefront and background of an image. It's that Out of Focus area, which draws your eye to the crisp subject... a car or face.

Now there's an obscure but super useful word for something we see quite often.  :D

My son never smiles

He inherited much of his personality from his Mom. He can hilariously funny and is very quick witted but just has maintained the dour demeanor throughout his life which included two marriages (no real causation there, just correlation). But recently every picture I see of him is like this:

signal-2025-12-25-08-07-46-487

The girl is someone he met a while back who lives four hours from him. They have been friends for a long time but, until recently, he has claimed that it is only friendship.

She travelled to my other son's wedding with him and they continued to NYC for a few days there.  And that was the end of the friendship and the beginning of something more.

He's going to change jobs, move back to Des Moines, and they are going to share a house.  And I expect to see more pictures of him smiling.

Merry Christmas to me.

What you eat could decide the planet’s future

What we put on our plates may matter more for the climate than we realize. Researchers found that most people, especially in wealthy countries, are exceeding a “food emissions budget” needed to keep global warming below 2°C. Beef alone accounts for nearly half of food-related emissions in Canada. Small changes—less waste, smaller portions, and fewer steaks—could add up to a big climate win.

Today is partly cloudy and mild.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 12/24/25 -- We hacked up most of the remaining brushpile in the parking lot, and some of the older one by the driveway, feeding those into the chipper.

EDIT 12/24/25 -- We moved the new mulch to the mulch pile.

EDIT 12/24/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.  As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

Rather than worry about whether our favorite Chinese restaurant is open tomorrow (or, heaven forbid, actually call around and find out) I decided to order tonight and just put it in the refrigerator to be ready for tomorrow. Chinese food is always better the next day.

Tonight will be pork loin in white gravy, grits and whatever green stuff we have lying around.

Just the four of us. I did not get the four legs any treats so I may have to go to the store and remedy that. Poor planning.

PB this morning was OK. Nothing wrong with it but I played mediocre. I really need to get with the ball machine and/or coaching. Maybe this weekend. I'll ask on Friday if there is a time when things will be quiet enough for me to snag a court and the machine. No telling with kids out and families looking for stuff to do.

It is nearly summer around here. Lovely weather to be out and about. I think we'll end up with the AC on by tomorrow. I don't much mind.  This is what the days look like now.  The tree will dump and start regrowing all at once, I suspect.

We got my pension pay today and it was an extra hundred bucks, less taxes. We've been thrifty so our bank and investment accounts are getting larger and with the USAA mutual dump back to me and now this extra and, I guess, SS will go up a bit. So we're losing out to inflation (which does not, of course, actually exist) but are making it up with thrift. And in a bull market all the investments decisions are brilliant.

All in all a decent end to the year. In six months we'll be ahead of where we were before last summer's crappy dental and car spending spree.

I heard back from Nest support and then remembered a similar response from them last year.  They can't find my account.  And they won't be able to.  And this happened last year and they were never able to fix it.  I had to dispute the charge but the card was fine so I never did cancel it.  Now I no longer need the card and have set it so nothing can be charged.  I guess I'll go through the same dispute and then cancel it altogether once the balance is zero.  If I had left myself a memo on the calendar I'd have already cancelled.  The only way Google will ever find the transaction is when it fails next year, I guess.  Won't be my problem.

I just shot myself with my weekly Semaglutide dose.  I'm still losing weight looking forward to the 180's.  I'm 191 or 192 right now.  Somewhere after 180 I'll start looking seriously at the end game.  Meanwhile it is kind of nice to be losing my stomach.  And downright weird to hug Dana.  We are two different people.

Cuddle Party

Everyone needs contact comfort sometimes. Not everyone has ample opportunities for this in facetime. So here is a chance for a cuddle party in cyberspace. Virtual cuddling can help people feel better.

We have a cuddle room that comes with fort cushions, fort frames, sheets for draping, and a weighted blanket. A nest full of colorful egg pillows sits in one corner. There is a basket of grooming brushes, hairbrushes, and styling combs. A bin holds textured pillows. There is a big basket of craft supplies along with art markers, coloring pages, and blank paper. The kitchen has a popcorn machine. Labels are available to mark dietary needs, recipe ingredients, and level of spiciness. Here is the bathroom, open to everyone. There is a lawn tent and an outdoor hot tub. Bathers should post a sign for nude or clothed activity. Come snuggle up!
